"Someday's Dreamers"
I watched the first dvd of "Someday's Dreamers", a short anime series about a young girl named Yume training to be a mage. She moves to Tokyo for the summer to start her training with a handsome teacher Mr. Oyamada.
I had tried to watch it when I first bought the dvd, but I had problems with the English dub. The best dubs are the ones I don't notice, but this one is overly noticeable. Initially I stumbled over Yume's abrupt change of accent. When she is speaking to her family and when she's upset, Yume slips into a regional dialect, apparently to indicate she is from a different prefecture. For the English dub, that translates into a thick Southern accent. Seeing a typical Japanese family sitting around and fussing over a pizza, speaking like they are from way below the Mason Dixon line is rather disconcerting. The British accent for Angela is horrible. Even I winced when she spoke. In the fourth episode, Runa is supposedly from Tokyo and she has even more annoying New York "youse guys" type accent.
The story itself is interesting enough to watch more, but I'm wondering if I'd be better off switching over to the Japanese track. I'm finding myself more focused on the dub than the actual series. "Someday's Dreamers" is definitely a kinder softer type of world with magic, a stark contrast to the dark gothic world of "Witch Hunter Robin".
