Finally over?
Oct. 24th, 2002 08:08 pmToday was a strange one. I arrived at my usual early hour to discover video cameras staked out in front of our building. Had I missed a memo? Had we investigated someone else? Apparently all of Wall Street was coming for a large scale meeting. At lunch, I noticed they were staked out on the other entrance as well, as if someone might try to duck out the back.
Then came the sniper news. Everyone held our breaths, hoping upon hope that these will be these will be the ones that stop this madness. We had gotten our hopes up before, only to be thoroughly disappointed. News leaked through email about the discoveries of the weapons and car and background. The library was filled with "Did they find... where did you see that?" I willingly admit that my first thought when these attacks started was to check every disgruntled ex-military/law enforcement/militia/hunting wannabe in the known area. No offense to any of those parties intended, I was just thinking off the top of my head who had the training/skill for the job. And now maybe maybe just maybe people can breathe easier and go to high school football games and do *normal* stuff without fearing a gunshot from nowhere. I admit I've been on edge. After the last death, I said aloud to no one in particular "Just get them, dammit, please!"
Plus our corner of DC has been taken over by horse stalls. MCI Center is hosting the National Horse Show so the horses are nicely berthed in stalls under white tents.
Hopefully my parents returned home to Florida today after Dad's final appointment. It was just as well. They were both listening to the upcoming weather reports with the expression of "How soon can I get back to warmer climate?" And boy was it cold today. And so overcast/white, like it usually looks later in the winter when it snows. Not a good sign for winter.
