The job is going fine. A little mindless, but surprisingly soothing.

Sad news from the US Figure Skating championships. Angela Nikodinov was involved in a car crash with her parents and coach in Portland. Her mother was killed in the crash. Understandably Angela has withdrawn from the competition. This was supposed to be the year Angela returned after all the tragedy and injuries. She looked really good in the one Grand Prix event I saw her in. It's a real shame.

First day of assignment went well. New type of library work for me, which is nice.

Discussion day at CVS brought some interesting kernels for thought. Someone asked about what we thought were our weaknesses as writers. In most cases, it was really easy to pinpoint. You just know some things come harder than others, whether it's believable dialogue or understandable plot. Or a plot, period. Harder to pinpoint for me anyway were my strengths. I never think about that. What's the line in Lisa Loeb song about "only hearing negatives?" Sometimes I'm so intent on "I can't write this" or "I wouldn't know how to describe that" that I don't consider what I am good at. I only hear the inevitable "Oh how cute!" to a humorous drabble without thinking "Gee, I did make some people laugh". I had to stop and think what about what I love to write and what I excel at. I admit I gravitate towards the backstories. Characters have histories, even if we catch the slightest glimpse of them. I eventually left Anne McCaffrey fandom because so many of the Fan Weyrs were focusing on current timeline stories, to the point you had to plan months in advance to even get a story in.

I have two stories to work on, so I can test some of my suspicions. My transportation challenge story shifted, but it's still rather obsessed with doom and gloom.
