Old Blue Eyes isn't home...
"Dead Famous" focused on Frank Sinatra this week, visiting sites in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. They focused their investigations squarely in Old Blue Eyes' heyday with the Rat Pack. I think it might have been just as interesting to focus on his earlier time with Tommy Dorsey for a comparison, but I'll come back to that later.
Most of the big casinos the Rat Pack frequented like the Sands are gone, but the Golden Nugget remains. Chris was in the very posh and opulent Sinatra suite. (Definitely one of those "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it" situations.) Chris commented on the larger than life presence and energy left behind in the room. That seemed to be a constant refrain actually throughout the episode.
The Tahoe sites were a little weird, but it sounded like it had an eccentric owner. The Thunderbird Lodge had an underground tunnel linking different parts of the lodge, including the card room and the boathouse. Chris experienced the second time when he couldn't connect to a ghost because he was a man. Wouldn't have thought spirits had gender issues, but there you go. Then Gail tried to coax something out of the spirit and weirdly they played back the EVPs "Look it's a lady" "Yeah"... maybe it's the Sinatra influence, but it also looks like "Luck be a lady..." which is probably a coincidence. (Although someone needs to tell the Golden Nugget person that that song was not written for Sinatra but for "Guys and Dolls".)
The Cal Neva sits literally on the border between California and Nevada to the point there are slot machines on one side of the casino and none on the other. An old thread was brought in, when they visited the Marilyn Monroe cabin. The showroom provided the same presence they'd felt before, but no real contact. Then they held the seance. I'm over with Gail on the skeptic side of things where these work. Chris started channeling and at one point, claimed Sammy Davis had been one of the spirits. When one of the other participants shouted "Get out!" Frank's short fuse was remembered. It didn't sound like Frank wanted to be contacted, which was a little chilling in itself.
Then again, Frank Sinatra was different than Elvis and Marilyn. He was an icon like them, but he lived a fairly long life by comparison.
The whole thing reminded me vaguely of a story I'd written for
elainemc and
isabeau's old Lonejack universe, back before LJ was synonymous with memes and posts. My lead character was a ghost hunter for lack of a better description. I had started a side story about her partner's night out with his wife when they discovered a ghost of their own. Remember I was saying how Sinatra's days with Dorsey would have been good ghost fodder too? Was that presence and energy as strong back when he was dealing with bobbysoxers and not mobsters? The story was dated the night Sinatra died in 1998. (Which is depressing in the stuff I haven't finished writing category...) Not sure if I'll finish it...
