And a GIP courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] jordannamorgan, just because.

So I've returned from my annual trek to the hinterlands of Exotic South Lansing for MediaWest. The weather was slightly chillier than I'd hoped, though it only really rained the one day. I was indeed stuck over at the Super 8 motel for the duration although friends were nice enough to give rides, especially when I stayed unreasonably late at the main hotel. Things are looking up though; I drew a reasonably low number for next year's hotel lottery.

Getting there was a trip and a half. Pittsburgh airport is much bigger than I realized, discovering that I needed to be on the other side of the airport to make my connection. Only to discover that our plane was delayed in Dayton, Ohio for mechanical problems. So I didn't get in until close to midnight.

The gen vids only ran about four hours, although California Crew returned in a *big* way with over an hour of vids. Still a lot of Stargate and Mag7 material, but also more obscure sources. A couple of Alias videos, including a Jack/Irina one which I loved. Stampede provided some great western related ones, including one for Mag7 with "Whisky for my men and Beer for my horses" which received a bunch of hoots and "perfect choice!" Nifty X2 one to the X-men animated theme.

I was also able to see some of Cindy's vids later, including the lovely WENN one for Hilary. Also lots of Star Trek: Next Generation vids from [livejournal.com profile] normadesmond. I marveled at their ability to pick out the episode that exactly, especially going by Dr. Crusher's hair.

The art show and dealers room continue to lean extremely heavily towards the slash fans. Stargate and Sentinel continue to be the dominant fandoms, although LoTR and Smallville had their adherents judging by stuff available.

I think some of my friends had the right idea by taking a year off from volunteering for MediaWest programming because I enjoyed more of the ones I attended than the ones I was actually on. The X-men panel included a lot of old comics fans. Astounded to see a full room of people for the "Am I weird because I don't like slash?" panel, wherein I heard some of the pressure put on certain fans for not being of that persuasion. Next year I may try to limit myself to the Livejournal/Internet related ones or maybe give myself a year off for good behavior. [livejournal.com profile] isabeau and [livejournal.com profile] normadesmond and I preached the LJ possibilities to other fans, some of which seemed genuinely interested. I'm not totally convinced that the mailing lists will disappear, maybe be used for other purposes. The sports panel devolved into a baseball discussion, no matter how hard we brought up football, horse racing or the Indy 500. The filk panel turned into a bonafide circle with a rendering of "Banned from Argo".

What I picked up: Some nice pics of Cyclops from X-men/X2 and one of Niobe from "Matrix Reloaded". Peter Wingfield 2004 calendar from Ashton Press. Two "10th Kingdom" zines and my trib copy of the "Remember WENN" zine which turned out fabulous. I'm delighted to have two stories in that zine and hope the cliffhangers being solved will prompt more bunnies. Oh yes, I must mention the plot bunny. One of the dealers came up with the cute idea of putting together your own customized plot bunny, with beaded dangles appropriate to your fandom. My bunny currently has a "Plot", "WENN", and "Xmen" dangle, although the plot one temporarily came disattached from the bunny, which I thought was an ominous sign. I really need to figure out a way to get a picture of the little one. It would be very easy actually to put your own bunny together from Michaels/Joanns/etc. Being evil, I also bought a Wolfram & Hart polo, since I work in far too many law libraries. A lot of filk music cds, along with two cds of Midnight Syndicate.

The Jyg people opted to go out to dinner this time around and return to the room afterwards. We went to the New China restaurant wherein I temporarily gave up my "safe" eating habits, trying both a Honey Garlic Chicken and a shrimp dish I've forgotten. Not too spicy, but both lovely! The videos made an excellent dessert in the form of ASH's episode of "Spooks"/"MI5", his revealing episode of "Manchild" and the Buffy "Biography" episode, none of which I had seen. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the MI5 series when it hits A&E though I imagine the show will be edited to pieces. (Note to self: "Sandbaggers" does appear to be on DVD if you ever want to play catchup with that series.)
