I did finally get the codec installed properly. I haven't caught up completely with the "Doctor Who" episodes yet.
"Father's Day" was a sad and bittersweet episode in the way most doomed time travel episodes wind up being. I sorta expected that Rose would wind up being disappointed in her dear old dad. Jackie was her usual stubborn self, even when the truth was stuffed in her face. I guess the real answer to the old "grandfather paradox" is that big scary beasts show up to destroy the universe. Who knew?
I was a little sidetracked in my goals though. To fill out the dvd, I added that "Hikaru no Go" special I had downloaded. I used that to test the video codec and just kept watching. I haven't watched the tv series, so the special actually didn't make a lot of sense, since I gathered the tv & manga differ in places. I've read the first few volumes of the manga, but the special takes place far enough in the future. Sai, a force of nature in the early manga, barely shows up in Hikaru's misty dreams. From what I gathered, Sai decided Hikaru was strong enough now to play on his own?
I sat up rereading the first two volumes. I completely lost track of time. I was going to start the third, but it was already past midnight. No, Sai, I am not reading about more Go. You have to be firm with these ghosts/spirits. Maybe I can soothe him with an icon?
