Needlework has its pillows and its needle rolls and apparently its biscornu. What are these fine objects? Tiny eight-sided embroidered pillow that can be used as a pincushion, an ornament, a scissor fob, whatever you can come up with. (Cat toy?)
own_two_hands has posted a lovely introduction to biscornus. She translated the original French version of an image intensive tutorial on how to put one together, as well as links to examples and free patterns. There is also a second biscornu tutorial based on an actual class given with a kit that'll give you ideas for what to use. The patterns seem quite simple, usually one or two colors. You'd have to be careful with the counting, but otherwise, they wouldn't be too difficult for beginners. I'd be more afraid of the actual sewing but that's my background showing more than anything.
