BaTB revisited

Once upon a time, there was a fandom. It brought together fantasy and romance and literary references. Then things changed in the fandom and it all went kaboom. "Beauty and the Beast" was one of my earliest fandoms, even buying zines and such. I was in college for the third season, so I only caught bits and pieces. Now the first season has finally been released on dvd, so it can be appreciated again. Or at least watched again. (Not that we're bitter or anything, are we, WENN fans?) [livejournal.com profile] azarsuerte voiced her opinion about the later part of the series and on Catherine Chandler as a character. I'm still not sure whether I'll buy the set or not. Some things age well and others do not. I have the same fears with "V" sometimes.

I managed to survive the DC ice storm, despite the aircast. I stayed home for the worst of it, knowing my mobility would be massively impaired, if not threatened. The last thing I needed to do was slip and hurt myself. I still avoided the side streets this morning, in favor of slightly more navigable route. Thank god I live so close between two Metros.

I scored tickets for Loreena's DC concert, fairly close up, too. I still remember our seats in Baltimore for the Mask & Mirror tour where we were almost on the first row. Of course I haven't been back to DAR since well... my high school graduation.

I've been deep in and out of the fandom twice at this point, so I've got plenty of issues, and I don't just mean all those fanzines. That said, when I started rewatching the episodes on video... yes, it was just as good. There are things I miss in retrospect; the last decade has taught me to appreciat the depth a season arc can bring to a show that simply didn't exist in the one-off series format that BatB was in.

But yes, the show itself? Just as wonderful. And even though I have the entire S1 on VHS, I will be buying the DVDs in the hope that voting with my dollars will encourage them to come out with S2.

Also, if you're at all interested in dipping your toes back in, there was a yahoo group that watched an episode a week and discussed it, S1 & 2 only, so no war factions.

These are interesting reflections about BatB. I did watch on the original broadcast, in fact, I haven't seen the show since it was canceled (never saw it on SciFi or anywhere else). I still have the last season and a few other episodes on tape. I loved it at the time it was on but never got involved in its fandom. However...as sad as I was about the fate of Catherine, I did indeed love Diana Bennett's character, right from the moment she was first introduced. She was developed with care and played with great integrity and sincerity by Jo Anderson, and she won me over in her first episode. I wouldn't have minded a romance blossoming between her and Vincent, either, but overall, the show as a whole developed the character of Vincent in a way that would have made that difficult to present plausibly, at least in fewer than five seasons. *wry look*

This show's production values made me a permanent fan of a lot of regular and semi-regular cast members, including Hamilton, Perlman, Jo Anderson, Jay Acovone, Armin Shimerman, Edward Albert and Roy Dotrice, any and all of whom I am always delighted to see in anything else. :-)

ha! Wait a couple of more decade and we can talk about bitter. 36 years later, Season One of ASJ is finally available for ordering. :-)
