When I posted the last Pocket Dragon cross-stitch finish, I mourned the lack of dragon icons besides Maleficent. Mind you, she made a lovely dragon. It wasn't her fault the nasty old prince wanted to stab her in the heart. Not that I'm bitter...
jordannamorgan has posted a set of dragon icons on
wolfbane_icons, including my current choice.
Since I posted my Five Vampire Influences, I've chosen to post my Five Dragon Influences.
1. Dragons in myth and folklore - It doesn't matter whether they're Celtic or Oriental, legends around dragon have always fascinated me.
2. Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern - Arguably one of my first major fandoms. I saw Anne McCaffrey at Dragon Con back in 1989 when Renegades of Pern had just been released. I was intrigued enough by what I saw to go looking for the books. But I didn't have anyone to tell me where to start, so I actually started the books with the one that looked the most interesting -- Moreta, set several Passes before the main crop of books. I guess I've always liked the backstory. *grins* I never quite liked the post-Aivas era of the Pern books. The early ones are still my favorites.
3. Maleficent in "Sleeping Beauty" - Like I said, she was such a magnificent dragon, especially when she rises up in her full form. The ending was much more traumatic than Bambi ever was.
4. Smaug in "The Hobbit" - I confess I watched the animated version of the "Hobbit". I even remember half liking it as a child. I did like protective Smaug watching over his horde like a proper dragon and giving his riddles.
5. Naomi Novik's Temeraire books - I never would have expected dragons to mix with the Horatio Hornblower/ Napoleonic Engand / Age of Sail crowd so well. Her latest Empire of Ivory just came out. I like the mix of the different breeds/styles of dragons.
Honorable mentions include: Lockheed, Kitty Pryde's pet dragon from X-men comics, R.A. MacAvoy's Tea with a Black Dragon, the cross stitched beauties of Dragon Designs & Teresa Wentzler, and yes even the Harry Potter dragons.

Date: 2007-10-03 01:27 am (UTC)I actually don't think I can say I have any dragon-related fandoms. But twenty years ago I was affected profoundly by a children's book, The Dragon Takes a Wife by Walter Dean Myers. Poor gentle Harry the dragon has to battle a knight to win a bride, and he's not so good at it, in spite of (or because of) the well-meaning magical help of a black hippie fairy...
The artwork in the first edition was charming. When I tried to track it down years later, all I could find was a later version with truly hideous modern illustrations--until a friend found a paperback version of the original. It remains a favorite birthday present. :)
