I *love* allergy season

Yes, that was sarcasm, friendslist. My Allegra prescription ran out and unfortunately the doctor who prescribed the Allegra has changed practices. I tried the OTC version of Claritin this morning and it has the same bad side effects as its sister Clarinex. Oh, btw, I was researching the push for the allergy drugs towards becoming over the counter and noticed one nasty side effect by insurers who *won't* cover Allegra now, because "all allergy meds are the same." I'm living proof that that isn't the case. Plus my apartment continues to be the living summer hell. Why the blazes do you come up with a system that bases itself off the exterior temperature in an area like DC with its humidity? For some reason, I think it'd make more sense to keep the temperatures normal and constant, rather than in constant flux all the time! Because of our rain, they haven't finished with cleaning the windows so they can return our screens. So guess who can't open her windows even she wanted to? (If I remember their second rain day schedule, they should be doing the cleaning today. *hope, hope*)

This was why I was up at 2AM before a work week. I came home reasonably early after a birthday party among the gaming/writing friends. Played some Chrononauts, which was wicked time travel card game where you're collecting artifacts and effecting paradoxes. One rule is if you have 13 parodoxes(paradoxi?) on the board, the world implodes. A certain gaming husband of gooberfishbowl (another Adam, tinagilman) thought it was a fine idea to try towards this end. We also discussed various superhero campaigns both new and potential. I actually pulled together a list of the fic since the last updates for the website, so *maybe* I'll get some work done tonight.

Oh, I can also vouch that all allergy meds are not the same. I took Claritan for a while, but it wouldn't stop my reactions to cigarrette smoke, so I was taking Allegra (I love Allegra!) and it worked.. perfectly. Even with cigarette smoke. But alas, the insuranse stopped covering it. Arrgghhh

So I started taking the OTC Claritan.. it worked, but since I already knew it didn't work for me I tried something else. Alavert That worked fine until the summer really kicked in and the last couple days have been sniffly nuts for me. So I'm back to taking Claritan. And ya know... I'm just sick enough of this garbage that I may just lump the cost and get Allegra because I worship Allegra. It works for me and I know it does.

I wouldn't mind if Claritin halfway worked. But the side effects are not worth the bother! I feel like I'm coming down with something. Is Alavert another OTC or prescription?

It's OTC and usually found along with the Claritan. It could work for you... I never noticed any side effects. (Of course, I never noticed any with Claritan either)

I talked to my allergist (or his receptionist). I reported the problems with the Claritin and Allegra, so hopefully, there will be a semi-happy ending. And yeah, I'm having to eat the charges for Allegra as well. It's either that or utter misery.

Just curious what side effects does Claritan give you?

Neither Claritan nor Allegra help me in anyway. And Allegra has awful side effects on me. It gives me the closest thing I've ever had to a migraine headache. Singulair is the same!

Haven't tried Alavert, hmmmm ...?

Hard to put into words, but basically I feel like I'm coming down with a cold. Sinus headache, sore throat, etc. I have none of those problems with Allegra.
