WFSA & Book 5

So I managed the supreme feat of *not* being spoiled on Book 5. I resisted the urge for the last bunch of days to read any spoilers that floated online. I nearly had heart failure at the Washington Science Fiction Association meeting I attended last night when someone announced matter-of-factly "I know who dies and if you don't pay me hush money, I'll tell you." I promptly stayed the hell away from that person during the discussions afterward.
Otherwise the meeting was amusing as they usually are when SF fans are together. The average age skews towards the older range I noticed. I discovered having friends in Toronto helps. Even if I can't go to World Con, I can at least help with the logistical planning. One of our hosts was an artist and had four Hugo awards in his study for "Best Fan Artist". Can we say a suitably impressed meep? Another person was tempting the crafters by selling Czech beads direct from a trip to Prague. Pretty baubles, many colors... so glad I didn't take the beading workshop at MediaWest because I would have taken home a bunch of beads last night.
Humor came in some strange ways. A review of a charming book on the bacteria, parasites, etc that live in the human body as written by someone who is apparently friends with John Cleese. (You can imagine the results...) Someone announced half jokingly that it had now rained forty days and forty nights, prompting calls for contracting bids for the Ark.
The official business mostly focused on the planning of their conventions, most notably World Fantasy Con which will be held over Halloween here in DC. I'm debating attending. I attended a bunch of years ago when it was held in Callaway Gardens, Georgia, when Anne McCaffrey was Guest of Honor. WFC is a business con, as in no costumes, no gaming, highly geared towards writers and the publishing end of things. The membership rate goes up in July, so I'll have to make a decision soon.
I picked up the Book at 8am this morning with about 15 or 20 other fans, predominantly adults. I have done a speed reading, but really have not absorbed it completely as I really want to savor this one. Especially if we have to wait even longer for the Book 6. (Thoughts on my reading process and related grumblings will be posted over on
wabbitseason so apologies in advance for cross-postage.)
EDIT: I nearly forgot my anniversary! As one will note in the Calendar section, my first post was exactly one year today. My has time flown.
