DVD woes

Yipee, I'm in the 21st century. I finally acquired a DVD player, Sony DVP NS315 as an early birthday present... sorta. I'm still having trouble hooking up the new toy so it actually works. Right now, the console actually moves through the tracks so that part seems to be hooked up, but I don't get any picture or sound on the television end. The tv is a five year old Phillips Magnavox that my father gave me when he upgraded to a larger tv. I'm worried that I need to upgrade the tv, which I can't afford right now. It's probably something simple, but damned if I know what it is. I've already spent a stress-filled day with my father trying to hook it up with no success and one near disaster. I'm too tired to deal with this.
