hildy89: (hail to the redskins)
So both my teams won this week. Bama blew out the Vols and the Skins held on for dear life against the Cardinals. We always used to have close games with them when they were still in the division. Next week is the juggernaut New England. Do not want!

I swung by the local library to return Connie Willis' "D.A" (short, unsubstantial, and disappointing) and discovered they've started a regular Graphic Novels section. They've had a comics/manga section in the Young Adult section with your Naruto and Spiderman and Xmen. The new section is small enough it's still shelved with the new books, but I brought home Will Eisner's "Best of Spirit" collection and I saw Fables and Meltzer JLA and the Complete Peanuts. I'm not sure what prompted this change, but we must encourage it, especially I see more DC represented.

Dinner with [livejournal.com profile] confettiofstars chatting about everything and anything as usual. I now am the proud owner of a Ra-Heru-akhety statue. He's guarding my desktop. Maybe he can give me guidance over the monitor.

Yes, I'm having desktop issues again, the same ones I had before. For some reason, the monitor cable keeps coming loose. I can be working on perfectly and it'll be sitting for awhile and suddenly poof, no monitor. I've restarted it twice now. I'm going to hunt the Dell site and see if they sell a monitor cable. Or would they be a simple Best Buy visit? (It's a flat screen if that helps/hurts.) I really don't want to replace the monitor again.

Last seen with [livejournal.com profile] ladyofchulak and [livejournal.com profile] boffo9. Not surprised at the results.

Which Egyptian God are you? )

[livejournal.com profile] ladyofchulak, you can have a Plushie Horus-Ra. The other two are Bast and Anubis.

After the day of shopping, today was the day of shopping and laundry. The bathroom is getting there. The sad thing is it probably has the most space in the apartment.

Sci Fi Channel is bringing back "Farscape" in a four hour mini-series. Someday I will catch up with that series. I lost track after the first couple of seasons and never quite saw enough of the episodes.

The most recent "Deep Sea Detectives" followed a recent case, the sinking of the ferry Estonia off the Swedish coast in 1994. With the loss of nearly 900 lives, it was the worst maritime disaster in Scandinavia. The investigations were plagued with problems, prompting several independent ones. The officials believed that the visor ripped off the ship, causing it to take in water. Other divers noticed differing details. They also described a rather sickening sight of bodies littered on the Baltic floor. (I did cringe, though, when they described DNA forensic work and showed the WTC footage. It's still too soon for me clearly.)

Spanish archaeologists have pieced together a full frontal portrait of a Egyptian pharaoh in a courtyard in Luxor. Traditionally Egyptians have done portraits of Egyptians in profile, limiting full shots to foreigners, gods and mythological characters. Some have hypothesized that this portrait is a sketch for a statue or perhaps a student piece. The archaeologists believe it dates from 1400 BC and may show either pharaoh Tuthmosis III or his mother Hatshepsut.

Meanwhile in Wrexham, Wales, metal detectors are also coming up golden, finding a fresh new hoard of Bronze Age jewelry and pottery. The same area yielded the gold cape discovered in Mold in 1833. The cape is apparently something of a bone of contention with the Welsh locals, since it was given to the British Museum because they don't have a secure enough museum in their area.

For the wine connisseurs and Egyptologists on my friends list, Spanish researchers have apparently solved a great mystery of what King Tut stocked in the royal wine cellar. Red or white? They analyzed the residues at the bottom of jars and discovered the telltale compounds that give red grapes their color.

The regular CVS meeting included sitting in on a guest author talk, Lauren Winner, author of Girl Meets God and Mudhouse Sabbath. The B&N community liaison had arranged for Winner to tailor her talk somewhat to our needs, answering our questions about writing and publishing. Her first book landed her on the B&N "Discover" program, exploring her spirituality and her conversion from Judaism to Christianity. She told us interestingly that her publisher Random House is doing two paperback editions for Girl Meets God, one geared towards the mainstream and one for their Christian publishing imprint.

Found the Nature magazine with the mummified lion article. The lion was male, suggesting he was possibly a dedication to Mahes, son of Sekhmet. Still no idea why I'm so fascinated with the subject, other than general curiosity.

[livejournal.com profile] sailormac: Had you seen this comic explaining Go?

Writing still stalling out. Pat, I'd like to buy a muse please, preferably not one that looks like Sharon Stone and causes chaos in her wake.

Mummified lion unearthed in Eypt. Clearly Bastet was not just the goddess of normal house cats, but also the big cats as well. I'll have to see whether we've already checked in and routed that issue of Nature. Knowing my luck, I sent it on its merry way without glancing inside, except for checking the numbering. Also a new icon community [livejournal.com profile] aesthetic_icons has opened for ones based off artwork, including a recent post of Egyptian themed icons.
