I'm finally hitting critical mass as far as my apartment is concerned. It's time to declutter stuff. One thing that I've wanted to deal with is the vhs collection. The bulk of the collection is stuff I've recorded off television. The professionally tapes, with some odd exceptions, will go off to the library for their Friends of the Library sale. The rest of the stuff I'm not sure what I'll do. I've looked at recycling options, but there isn't a lot of inexpensive options out there. Greendisk sounds great for a company, but lousy for private citizens. I feel guilty as hell just tossing stuff, but I don't know any other options. Most of the friends that would like the stuff I have already have the dvd sets. And the only one I know clinging to VHS has very different TV/movie tastes. So I'm going through the stacks see what I can chuck and what I keep until dvd sets are available. Buffy and Babylon 5 are the big ones that are going as is Pretender. Skating and Another World and WENN are staying put as are more obscure series. Hopefully that'll clear up some space.

Other ideas?

Those who know me and have visited my apartment know I'm a typical packrat fangirl. I am perpetually cluttered and disorganized. I am a typical packrat fangirl. I live alone in my one bedroom apartment with my Stuff. They're not very good company, truth be told, and certain corners have been telling me to get off my duff and clean up a little more.

So I felt quite virtuous about today's accomplishment. I worked on cleaning the kitchen area, dumping expired stuff and trash left and right. I was quite ruthless by my standards. No angsting, just "Do I need/use/want this?" While it's nowhere near perfect, it does do a body good to see mostly clean countertops. Whether it will stay that way is anyone's guess, but I think I've made a good start. Sometimes you just need a good push in the right direction.

They've muted CSPAN. Thank you, thank you.

For the cat lovers out there, beware the power of the Random Kitten Generator. Just what you need for that quick sugar fix.

I nearly brought this up on [livejournal.com profile] homekeeping, but thought better of it. [livejournal.com profile] neadods has had some interesting posts on making decisions on VHS tapes. I'm planning a similar weed at some point. I already cataloged my list of dvds so I don't wind up buying something twice. I can donate the commercial VHS tapes to the library, if they're open for donations. They close those down before a library sale. Unless someone really wants old Babylon 5 (1st & 5th seasons mostly) or Avengers sets? But my bigger question is getting rid of the home taped VHS. As more season sets are released, I can eliminate some of my clutter easily. I've reused some of the tapes for the Another World collection I've started, but how do I deal with the others? Just discard in the trash? Are they recyclable in some fashion?

The weather is absolutely horrible today, gray, gloomy and rainy. I'll do groceries and errands tomorrow. But the spring cleaning continues. I've stacked the mysteries on their sides as well and now I've opened up all kinds of space on my poor bookshelves. I might actually see the shelves rather than the piles on them. I've also changed this LJ around a little with a new layout. I think the coloring goes quite well with Hilary. I'm also going back into the old entries and tagging them. I've left the tags list visible for now, but eventually I'll probably hide it.

I spent last night at a board games night playing Apples to Apples and Citadels. Citadels was a fun game where you're building districts and people take turns being King. It was good to get away for a Friday night.

My apartment application was approved yesterday, so I'll call the office on Monday to sign a lease.

The cleaning and organizing continues. I think I need to see if I can find new holders for the hanging folders in my file cabinet. The ones in there are ancient and look like they'll collapse at any minute. Fortunately, my new assignment, starting tomorrow, will be near a Staples, so that's easily solvable. I was half afraid I had deep sixed some of the workshop handouts from CVS, but I found the ones I was worried about. I've been trying to get my notes together from the author events I didn't chronicle here. I put all the ones I found in my memories by event date. There will be a catch-up post later, mostly for my own benefit.

I feel supremely virtuous this Easter Sunday. I've been dumping whole piles of old newspapers and etc. It doesn't even put a dent in the clutter in this place, but it does make me feel a little better.

I haven't written anything this weekend, original fic or otherwise. I've been very uninspired. The omens challenge sounded so interesting when I came up with it, but I can't come with anything! *pouts*

Darling, those nails!
Darling, those clothes!
Lentils are one thing but
Darling, with those,
You'd make us the fools of the Festival
And mortify the Prince!

Ahem. Something about doing housework makes me start quoting "Into the Woods" or humming "Cinderella" songs. Certainly not "Whistle While You Work". Note to self, could you please have a less messy shampoo than Head & Shoulders? Because cleaning up an unseen blue spill on the bathroom is not my idea of Friday fun.

Nano continues. I spent part of the day chez murky coffee with [livejournal.com profile] writer_rivki. They do have a few cushy chairs upstairs, but none of the big sofas. It was nearly empty when we arrived around noon, although it was filling upstairs later. I wrote a fair amount, I'm over 7K now, but I want to see if I can catch up from taking off yesterday. Fortunately I have a snarky family that adores wordplay. I plead brain frying from interview that went well, torrential downpour, Borders book spree, and CVS meeting. All coincided to make me feel less than enthusiastic about writing anything. I was doing well to remember my name.

My parents are coming up next week with tentative plans to attack the dread apartment. Those of my friends who know I cringe at the word "Clean Sweep" may mock and laugh and keep me in their prayers. Moving and cleaning are good ways to increase the family blood pressure. But I have been trying to make the place look halfway decent for when they get here, so we can point at the problem spots and know what to do. Theoretically. I cleaned quite a bit today. I reorganized a chunk of my music collection again, including putting covers/cds back in their cases. I love using those little plastic sleeves, which is fine, until your collection is impossible to keep track of! It's one of those days I'd wish for an Ipod of any stripe. I suspect I'm also doing this as Nano prep, since strangely, if I have some idea what the music style for the book is like, it's easier for me to write. I doubt I'll go the whole soundtrack route. Right now, the soundtrack has a very bizarre blend of swing, classical, oldies and modern stuff. Oh, I did post the tracks for the Nano mix cd I did last year, if you want to see how my associative brain works (or doesn't).

Finished the Homicide dvds. Bunnied by very unexpected character. Renewed my love for Baltimore. Both things may wind up in the Nano.

Yay Red Sox! Go Braves!
