A watched pot never boils...
Jan. 16th, 2006 10:32 pmAnd a searched for necklace will never be found. Since I came back from Florida, I had misplaced the necklace I bought at the Ren Faire. I grumbled, I pouted and I cleaned and I tried in vain to remember where I had last seen it. As hard as I tried, though, I couldn't find it. I even took out my frustration on dessert. My kitchen smells like Betty Crocker's Warm Delights chocolate cake mix. After a second and more successful attempt, I retired to an evening of a chocolate cake and "Cupid". I had forgotten how deliciously snarky that first episode was. When that was over, I went back into my room and put back all the stuff I had taken off my tv cabinet in my cleaning process. Only to bend down and what did my eyes see but the shining silver of the necklace. It had fallen on the floor in between my collection of notebooks.

Boiling water
Mar. 16th, 2004 07:42 pmYou know the jokes about people who can't even boil water?
*sheepishly raises her hand*
I'm embarrassed to admit that I would be one of those people. I can use a microwave and toaster oven, although maybe not for others. I just never learned or I made do with prepared foods.
So I delved into unknown territory yesterday when I tried to cook pasta. I was so utterly clueless about measurements for how much water per pasta. Cooking for one versus cooking for four is a big difference. I was so used to thinking of thinking in terms of preheating temperatures on the toaster oven that I stared at the knob for the burner.
After two attempts with flat noodles and penne, I think I can call my first cooking attempts a success. Mostly. Cooking has the fuzziest math on earth with a pinch of this and a little of that. I'll figure it out. I won't be kicking Emeril out anytime soon.

Every once in awhile my father has a good idea. He was all excited when he noticed a local branch of "Big Bowl" coming at the Clarendon Market Commons. Unfortunately, they took too long to open. He was already moved away to the "warmer climes". "Big Bowl" is an Asian restaurant with some traditional dishes, but what I liked was the "make your own" stir fry. Basically you took a bowl and went to their choices and added whatever veggies you wanted. In my case, lots of snow peas and carrots and tomatoes. Then you give them the bowl and they stir fry your choice of meat/poultry/etc with your choice of sauce. So no getting stuck with the mushrooms you don't want or the veggies you don't eat anyway... just very very good food. Highly recommended.
