Musicals and more musicals: A ton of icons, both text and pictures, for some of my favorite musicals -- Annie, 1776, Singin' in the Rain. I'd forgotten all the Republican jokes in "Annie" because of Daddy Warbucks. I will go back snag some later.

DW icons

After [livejournal.com profile] neadods's prompting, I did some DW icons. Caps are from "Tooth and Claw". I included the bases because I'm not the best with fonts.

And lo and behold cries rang out throughout the DC Metro area - "We want Dallas". Sometimes Sundays are just lovely to behold. I couldn't have asked for a better game, unless there was a shutout to boot.

Speaking of the boot, the aircast is officially gone. I'm wearing the lighter shoe now and will switch completely to two sneakers next week. I still think my toes are going to freeze in this thing. As long as it doesn't snow or rain...

I leave for my annual holiday pilgrimmage to Florida on Wednesday night and will return Monday. I'll have occasional access to my email and LJ, but not in the "Did someone update?" way I normally am.

Wanted to show off one of the two new icons. [livejournal.com profile] glimglamoury has done several lovely sets of icons based on BPAL (Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs) fragrances. I think she's taking requests if you have a particular fragrance you like.

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] sailormac and [livejournal.com profile] normadesmond:

Make me an icon. (Or get someone else to make it for you, I'm not picky.) It can be just a cropped picture or a simple line of black text on a white background. However, what I'm looking for is an icon that you really, really think I should have or use. Something that you feel typifies me. Soemthing you feel would make an appropriate default icon. Show me what you think of me and/or my journal.

Icons!

Yes, yes, yes. The news spread fast and furious today about the 100 icons for the paid members with extra icons. Suddenly everyone started searching for their old icons they'd rotated out or hunted down caps/scans. I was no exception. My zip disks gave a merry chase. The one disk with my older icons was in a different box than the other box of disks. Someday I will be organized. It may be when I'm old and grey, but it will happen. Mostly I was noticing the wide range of my fandom interests and how times have changed for the better technology wise. The quality has certainly improved on screen captures and scanners. I found season 1 X-Files pictures that were grainier than my desk. In a fit of iconing, I posted a bunch of Cass & Frankie related icons over at [livejournal.com profile] baycity, mostly bases, because I still don't trust my abilities with fonts.

Not having a good night. I feel dreadful. I have a sinking feeling I've been coming down with something for the past week or so, but have been in steadfast denial. Or combined with other yuckiness so couldn't see it for what it was. They always hit together, have you noticed? It's been sapping my energy big time. I've been sleeping way too much lately. I suspect this will be a weekend where I hide under the covers or curl up on the main couch.

My icons

I saw a meme going around about explaining the user icons one uses. So here are mine. I'm running late for work since I stayed home to call for a doctor's appointment. I'm officially worried now for a bunch of reasons I won't describe here.

Feeling somewhat better. The extra sleep certainly isn't hurting my cause.

The voting in [livejournal.com profile] aesthetic_icons's first contest is over. I won third place in the base contest for the Dicksee "Yseult" base. There were some very pretty entries and interesting to see the variety in artists.

Alphasmart is working merrily away. I figured out how to send the files over to my computer through USB cable this morning. Basically it works like a keyboard emulator, sending the file line by line.

Watched some more Firefly last night, leaving one disk left. *wah, me want more* Zoe and Inara kick *so* much butt. I really can't believe Fox killed this. Oh right... it's Fox. Maybe I can believe it.

I was reading Natsuemaya's Manga/Anime newsblog and learned that there will be "Voices of a Distant Star" manga starting in April.

[livejournal.com profile] aesthetic_icons is having an icon contest themed "My Favorite Artist". Since I adore the Pre-Raphaelites, I picked Sir Frank Dicksee (1853-1928) as my choice. The second one was my first attempt using templates so I hope it isn't too bad. The template was made by [livejournal.com profile] minttea.

You're probably tired of hearing me complain about the weather. But darnit, I was hoping to feel like "doing stuff" as in outside in the sunshine, but no, another torrential downpour appeared where there had been beautiful sun for the last day or two. I was humming the line from Guys and Dolls "Likes mud, likes mud, this guy says the horse likes mud," until I watched another horse race on by. And that folks is why I can't get too excited about a possible Triple Crown. Although I was vastly amused to discover Roger Clemens could not even beat the Cubs for his 300th victory. After listening to Kathy Agel expound on the virtues of the Yankees for an hour and how Roger would win it against the Red Sox at Media West, I feel strangely vindicated.

I have posted the first set of icons over at [livejournal.com profile] remember_wenn. Bless [livejournal.com profile] gpsysngbrd for the nice screen captures. The blank ones are free to be used and adapted and captioned.

Girls only RPG started on Friday with the character generation session, along with discussions about the "game contract", as in what we want and don't want in the campaign. I had never experienced that sort of input before, so I wasn't sure what I could offer in the way of ideas. We're using the new Marvel game system, set in the fictional San Angelo. Which prompted a crash course in "gaming math". I was again reminded of Helene Hanff who wrote "I don't add too well in plain American. I haven't a prayer of ever mastering bilingual arithmetic." After being amused to read a comparison between character generation and Dewey cataloguing, I mentioned this at the game wherein one of my gaming friends retorted "Does this make Gurps the Library of Congress?"

Finally caved in and bought a subscription to Chronicle of Higher Education on a month to month basis. I've found too many interesting articles through that magazine, like the essay contest by Fairleigh Dickinson University on "Academic Libraries in 2012", archived on Dr. James Marcum's website. I love playing "What if?" and "Why not?" It's part of the reason I love science fiction so much. I willingly admit that some of the ideas seem a bit far-fetched, but the writer in me wants to take a spin through that hypothetical world. If the librarians or Cybrarians as one group called them now use VR technology to work with customers, do they work remotely? With wireless connections these days, it almost doesn't even make sense for users to come to the reference desk. I was able to get help from Library of Congress' microfilm connection by a simple email form. Extend that "Ask a Librarian" even further to see what you might get.

Doujinshi

Okay, in looking for HP icons, I've discovered another "odd" corner of fandom I wasn't really familiar with. Vanessa's Harry Potter LJ icons showed a full set of the Harry Potter characters in manga style, drawn extremely well, I might add. So I inquired politely where the sources for those icons came from. The response was Doujinshi, a type of manga fanfiction. I think I was aware from mailing lists that manga fans create their own comics. I wasn't aware how many HP doujinshi comics were out there. One site, Doujinshi Alley, includes scans of sample pages and descriptions of the comics/gags/etc included. Some of them are strange... some of the character portrayals are a little off... one Snape portrayal made me go "Huh?" just because the hair is so long. Given the owl on the shoulder, I halfway wondered if it was an older Harry sans glasses.
