Tolkien home scholarship, flash fiction and leeching Miyazaki

"Lord of the Literature": Students can take a year long literature course called "Literary Lessons from 'Lord of the Rings'", including other readings from Arthurian romances, Beowulf and Homer.

Warren Ellis wants your flash fiction, if you're on LJ and unpublished. Stories must be 200 words long and due Friday. I'm still not sure whether I'll go through with it.

Ghibli did have an extended preview of "Howl's Moving Castle" in Quicktime format online, but apparently it has been taken offline because of excessive leeching.

Going to the River

While I was in Florida, I watched some of the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel. After the fun and games of the celebrity event on Bravo, watching those high level players betting tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars is quite scary. Alas, Comcast does not carry the Travel Channel, so I'm stuck with the ESPN version. I'm watching the episodes from their marathon. Some of these players are trips. And some love to trash talk.

Ford ran an ad asking for stories from WWII "Rosie the Riveters". A National Historical Park for Rosie the Riveter is in Richmond, California.

Happy birthday JRR Tolkien. I'm no closer to reading your mammoth tale than when you celebrated your eleventy-first... I take my time, like the Ents.

The Professor

Happy birthday, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, on your 111th birthday, a fine mark of distinction. At 9pm, I toasted you with an old SCA goblet and a fine brew of orange drink. Never mind I've had trouble navigating your books... thank you for creating Middle Earth and its inhabitants. I'm glad that people are finally learning to appreciate your works now, even if you would probably be shaking your head at all the fuss.

"The Professor."
