My beading friends might have enjoyed today's Express with the interview of Penelope Diamanti, the owner of Beadazzled stores in DC/VA/MD. (The edition is downloadable at ReadExpress on page E3 or 51 in the pdf file) She has published a book Beadazzled: Where Beads and Inspiration Meet available on her website with previews of some of entries. She claims she didn't pick any "sculpture masquerading as a necklace" for the book. I'm a little surprised she started with earrings as her basic learning point, rather than just stringing a necklace.

The joy of orthotics
May. 12th, 2006 02:30 pmI had forgotten what an utter pill breaking in new orthotics was. I'm so used to leaving them in all the time that this "wear for 1-2 hours, wait for your feet to go OW! and then switch out of them" is just maddening. That's the point of the orthotics, so I don't have to think about my feet. Fortunately I'm off my feet for most of the day, so I can use the orthotics for the commute when I am most likely to be stuck on my feet for long periods of time.
I've moved to a new desk again away from the maddening rush of the newsroom to the quiet and serenity of the library. If you ignore the whirring fans of the server thingy behind me, actually it is relatively quiet. I don't have as many distractions around me, which is a good thing mostly. But there's no windows or signs of daylight or life... and to a degree I miss the newsroom hububub. How am I supposed to keep up with the news?
Google had an apt quote for today:
A desk is a dangerous place from which to watch the world.
- John le Carre

Passing of an era
May. 12th, 2006 04:37 pmThe Ballston area is losing one of its big landmarks. Bob Peck's Chevrelot is disappearing from its venerable corner. They've already taken down the sign and everything.
