Normal names need not apply

Chicago Tribune's Eric Zorn has a blog entry about baby names. He mentions the fact that Madison continues to be in the top 5 of baby girl names. The top 500 also includes several variants on the name. Aside from the Daryl Hannah connection, he wonders what the current reasons for its popularity. More likely it's the same fad for unisex names one that gives out names like Mackenzie and Peyton. Interestingly the most popular girls name are the twin Ems of Emily and Emma. Biblical names are popular for boys topped by Jacob.

The Social Security Administration has a searchable database so you can see where your name rates or doesn't, going back 100 years or so.

Woot! I'm #4! (Amusingly enough, in both sexes... I would be a Matthew had I been a boy.)

Interesting... Anne has become less and less popular over the years. The year I was born, it was in the top 100.

Mine has done the opposite. Julia was rated 130 when I was born but is now ranked 33. And to my delight, Julie is ranked much lower. Hah!
