If you happen to buy the Sonic Screwdriver Flashlight, don't panic when it doesn't work straight out of the box. I opened mine yesterday and discovered this. After everything that happened at MWC, I was prepared for the worst case scenario. I felt like a silly kid with my own new Christmas toy and worried I'd broken it already. Nowhere is it mentioned on the packaging or instructions, but there's a tab inside that blocks the flashlight from working. Once you've removed that, it lights up with an ominous blue light. I solemnly promise I won't try to open my door with it. I might search for missing keys though.

I'm on a Big Finish roll. The last two MWC have left me diving back into the Whoverse. I listened to "The Blue Tooth" Companion Chronicle featuring Caroline John reprising her role as the divine Liz Shaw. Caroline's voice sounded just different enough that I can see why she hasn't reprised Liz that often, unless you picture this as the older and wiser Liz looking back on her experiences. She carried the bulk of the story with only Nicholas Briggs to bounce of. She even provides the "voices" of Three and the Brigadier. Their characterization didn't feel that off, but I'm torn about part of Liz's own. In her few appearances, Liz always came off in the series as a nice meld between the mod British girl and the brainy scientist, proving you could be both. Maybe they decided that was too Sueish or something, but "The Blue Tooth" would make you think it wasn't her idea at all, influenced more by her choice of girlfriends than anything else. I'm not a fan of the Cybermen stories, so the story itself didn't wow me exactly. I could though picture Three's sad reaction at the end of the program at Brigadier's approach to eliminating the remaining Cybermen. I still want to write that Liz encounter with Harriet Jones. I still have "Spearhead from Space" from Netflix so I can rewatch her first adventure.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] suzy_queue, I've ahemed the first season of "Torchwood" for a weekend marathon. I know who to blame for this. *stern glare*

Everyone always blames me. Hee!

Completely and utterly to blame. *nods* And now there's no more. *mourns* I maintain my original observations though. I loved Ianto and Toshiko, but Gwen and Owen only on alternate Wednesdays. Or whenever Torchwood aired.

That's kinda standard (or I'm just seeing it more often) on things that come with batteries included. It's to keep the batteries from running down should the gizmo be accidentally switched on while still in the box.

Incidentally, I noticed a friend of mine has a couple of Nancy Drew books up for grabs at Paperback Swap. I didn't know if you'd be interested or not.

Depends on the titles/editions truthfully. I haven't signed up for the PB Swap yet, but I'm considering. Certainly a good way to get rid of some duplicates I've acquired.

The Nancy Drew books she has are Danger on Parade (#77) and The Riddle in the Rare Book (#126).

I cannot praise Paperback Swap enough. If not for them, I'd barely have half the Saint books I do now, as well as a couple of things I've wanted for years and one gem I didn't know existed. And since you read a lot of more modern/less rare books than I do, you might get even more out of it.

I agree about the Blue Tooth. She seemed to spend a lot of time unconscious or tied up, and not really being brainy!!!

Did you feel that the relationship between Liz and Jean was chock-full of lesbian subtext?

"At the time, I was the biggest prude in the Southern counties. Jean changed all that."

"She introduced me to the wonders of....well, let's just say that she opened my eyes to the world beyond the lecture hall - all nighters that weren't spent cramming for exams."

"Jean was always telling me to open them at every opportunity." [OK, that one is about curtains. But Caroline John sounds so suggestive!]

Oh, god, yes! I listened to it the first time and blinked and did a double take or two. Usually I'm the last person to get that kind of subtext, so I'm seeing it, it tells you how blatant and suggestive it was.

Honestly, I wonder if it was subtly inserted canon. I mean she and Jean did live together...(I totally requested Liz/Jean in the DW femslash ficathon, but I'm not optimistic)

They were the Willow and Tara of 50s (or 60s?) Cambridge, yes. They even had a cat. Poor Puddles...

It sounded like it was meant to be the 60s from Liz's intro. And yes, poor Puddles in the wrong place at really the wrong time. I liked all of your ficathon requests actually. I just wish I had confidence in my abilities to write in the Whoverse.
