I haven't posted my progress on the Ink Circles Mystery SAL this month, so I thought I'd post some update pictures, along with another ongoing WIP.

The US Open is nearly over. I've made most of my goodbyes to Henman, and said hello to some new faces. New American face John Isner towered (he's 6'9"!) over everyone, even swiped a set from Federer. He's also disproving the idea that no good pros come from college tennis. The majority of the PGA golfers all played for some university, but the tennis programs are hurting. Bet they'll get a boost from this story. The other story was the Serbian triad. All of them brought style and flair and fun to their games. Novak Djokovic is moving through the men's draw. He does some hysterically funny (and devastatingly accurate) impressions of tennis player's service antics. Last night after he won his semifinal he imitated Nadal and Sharapova.

Cross stitch wise, I think my first annual US Openalong was quite successful. I posted a scan of my progress on "Garden Verses". Despite a bad frogging incident that threatened my stitcher's morale, I gamely carried on. The gallery with my updates are here to give some context of how it's going, but this section was mostly what I've worked on for the last two weeks with the arm and papers. Needless to say I'm quite pleased. I still have the men's semis and the finals to watch and maybe I'll add yet another scan if there's sufficient progress.

My old Cafe Tirolo changed management awhile back. I had dinner tonight and while the pizza was mostly the same, the ambiance sadly was not. Gone was the homey family atmosphere of the place. The previous owner used to know me by sight, since I came in so often. The classical and Alpine/Swiss/Italian folk music had been replaced by smaltzy 70s pop music. Very disheartening to see.

US Open has opened in Flushing Meadow, so my nights will be filled with tennis again. They had a tribute to Althea Gibson tonight before the evening matches. It was a little eerie hearing the band playing on television, while the local high school band was practicing across the street.

Over on the [livejournal.com profile] cross_stitch community, [livejournal.com profile] fuzzyboo03 has suggested a US Open Stitchalong, similar to the one they did for the World Cup. I could use the extra incentive. I'm planning on getting some work done on "Garden Verses", although I'm frogging left and right tonight.

Needlework

I updated the needlework blog with my last two finishes. I picked up Mirabilia's "Garden Verses" yesterday again. I'll need a smaller project to vary with it eventually. I'm not one of those people who can work nonstop on one massive project all the time. I think it's why I wind up with these long stretches between needlework. One of many reasons.

May I?

So I spent a leisurely weekend organizing & cataloguing some of the needlework charts and getting more stitching done on "Garden Verses". The browns and golds are getting a bit wearying, so I'll probably move back to the purples and red at some point. The one bright side of big projects -- you can do a rotation within a rotation. Unfortunately you don't always feel like you're getting anywhere.

I'm planning to hit the LNS this weekend, since it's conveniently down the street from the comic book store. Yes, it's Free Comic Book Day again on May 6th, including a Justice League Unlimited issue. I still haven't sat down with my chosen projects for the Blue & Gold Along to figure out what I need. That needs to happen before this weekend obviously.

Big Finish, the people doing the Doctor Who audio dramas, now have the license to do Dark Shadows programs as well. They're apparently trying to get some original cast members to reprise roles. The official website is Dark Shadows Reborn. I've heard decent things about the Big Finish Who programs, but I haven't really explored them at all.

Otherwise it's Monday and ack, only a few more weeks before con!

Library book sale started officially today. I picked up only four books, including the smallest edition of "Mists of Avalon" I had ever seen. Usually it's printed the larger trade format. The book sale has expanded considerably in other media. The VHS section was huge this year. How much of that is their donations and how much is the library itself clearing out its deadwood I'm not sure. As usual, I felt extremely cramped and claustrophobic. It wasn't helping that I felt distinctly under the weather last night. I'm hoping it will pass over. I do not want to get sick before the con this year again.

Actually picked up and worked on Mirabilia's "Garden Verses" for the first time in a year. It took me a little while to get my bearings back. It was good to do needlework again. I do tend to spend too much time staring at a computer screen sometimes. This is a good way to get out of that rut. I'm still distracted by the shiny new projects more than the older ones. Isn't that always the case though?

Saturday was the writing marathon at the soon to be renamed Common Grounds. I'm about as prepared as I ever am for Nano. A few notes here, assorted chapter synopses and a lot of character and plot questions... just the usual. The Redskins weren't playing this week, so I used the bye week to catch up on errands, including getting a new printer cartridge and assorted Nano office supplies. You simply can't go into Nano without an array of pens, pastel colored notecards and sacrifical legal pads. Maybe I'm just weird that way.

I'm getting back into needlework, working on Mirabilia's "Garden Verses" during the World Series. I feel like I've been working on this big project forever. I prefer doing the older patterns by some designers before they've become overly enamored of beads and metallics. Mirabilia's patterns usually have nice solid blocks of color I can manage while I keep a weather ear on the score. This piece has one metallic thread, but at least it isn't blending filament. Also a few blended colors, but again it's just a few accents, not a confetti effect.

With the filing project done, I'm back to being unemployed tomorrow. Being a temp sucketh mightily right now.
