Manga article from Eclipse Magazine: Mainly focuses on the Viz titles, including FMA and the upcoming Shoujo Beat titles.

Obviously [livejournal.com profile] ithurtsmybrain has had a bad effect on my anime watching. I was watching the latest two volumes of ROD TV over the weekend and decided it might be fun to crossover Yomiko Readman and Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next. What would Jurisfiction do with a Paper Master? And then I was reading "Lost in a Good Book" and one of the opening bits for each chapter comments on certain urban legends Thursday knows including that Spoiler? ). It sounds a lot like Mr. Gentleman in the tv series, doesn't it?

On the other hand, I still couldn't watch the first episode of ROD TV volume 4 without visible cringing. It has nearly four years, but there are some images that are burned into your brain.

Cat clinic outrages parents: They turned an DC elementary school into a spaying & neutering clinic for 500 cats, using the cafeteria and some classrooms. The parents claim they were never informed. Not too surprising, since it technically wasn't a school event. And the parents with kids who have alleries and asthma are raising a snit, so they've closed down today to finish cleaning the building. I understand it's a necessary cause. I'm not sure why they thought using a public school was a good idea, aside from space considerations. It's one thing to host a show or something and another to turn it into a medical ward. It wouldn't be the most sterile environment for starters. Of course, if they were doing the same thing with dogs, I'd be nervous.

V remake?

According to Kenneth Johnson, NBC is apparently interested in doing a complete remake of the V mini-series. I'm leery of remakes, especially for old favorites. How many of them have lived up to the original? "V" was one of my first fandoms, in the sense I collected anything I could find on the series. I had all the Pocket books and comic book adaptation. I even cretaed a little shuttlecraft in one of my old computer camp programs. Jane Badler was one of my favorite villainesses and how could I not like a character with nearly my own name?

To add to my concerns, Johnson reports the WWII references will be changed to something more topical. Now granted a generation of Holocaust survivors have died since the original version aired, but I still find that historical connection one of the strongest of the original. The old man telling the kids to paint a "v for victory" on the propaganda posters... the fifth column within the Visitors... besides do I really need an alien version of "24"?

Johnson also was responsible for "Alien Nation" which explored similar "us and them" or "them among us", depending on how you perceive it. I hope he keeps those themes in mind while penning this "remake". I don't hold out a lot of hope.
