Digital cameras?

Okay, the birthday is approaching and I've floated the idea with yon parents about acquiring a new digital camera. My current one is an older model HP Photosmart 215 -- very clunky and bulky. I'd like something fairly slim and portable that doesn't cost a fortune. You've seen examples of what I generally take pictures of -- travel and/or needlework. What do other people use and/or recommend?

I have a Canon elph100 -will have to find the specific name-

I got it at WalMart for $190

Takes GREAT video... which I haven't uploaded anywhere yet, but the photos on my LJ under the RCPM tag were taken with it -except for the one of Boots in nothing but an apron :)-

So... that's my take :)

Don't buy an HP.
Don't buy a Kodak.

Buy either a Canon, Olyumpus, or Sony

Canon's are awesome, i have 4. My dad calls me a Canon snob.

My parents have a Kodak Z712, which I have used and found to be a completely amazing little camera. It takes *huge* pristine shots, has a very impressive zoom, captures fast motion, and even records short video clips. I can recommend it strongly, and I definitely think it would be just right for the kinds of pictures you take.

It's nicely fit-in-the-palm size, although it has a rather traditional camera shape.

I love and adore my Nikon Coolpix p50. I tested over a dozen cameras before choosing this one. The entire Coolpix line is fantastic, but I especially love mine for its size, price and ability. The zoom is unbelievably crisp and the video produces clear picture and sound as well. It also comes bundled with a really great program for uploading from your camera to the computer - that program has made my life so easy. You see my pictures every day, and I think we shoot about the same things.
