Project Runway season 5 starts on Wednesday on Bravo. Blogging Project Runway has a list of the contestants and a spoilery link that lists all the challenges and guest judges. And the Bravotv site has also been updated. I should just pick whoever I hate the most -- they're guaranteed to win. At least for the last two seasons...

Remember how I thought "Project Shoe Designer" would be a cool style contest? You, too, could be the next Manolo Blahnik or Stuart Weitzman. Nine West is actually doing just that with Shoe Star where seven designers vie for a feature in Footwear News (FN) and join the Nine West design team. Never mind I couldn't wear any of the shoes I designed for them. The first two challenges are online already.

So I came to the library to look at their resume writing books. My resume needs a massive overhaul to reflect more of my strengths. Their wireless connection is a little spotty. I'm beginning to wonder if it's my wireless card. How do I find out what type of card was installed in my laptop? It's several years old, so I'm suspecting the wireless world has surpassed my poor old Dell. Meanwhile I need to call their tech support about the monitor. It's the power cable. For some reason, it can't seem to stay connected for too long. One minute it'll be working fine and next it'll be blinking at me.

And I want to randomly strangle the web designer for a fashion designer's site. Forms should not be the only way to contact someone -- an actual email address would be nice! Right now, the form doesn't think there's an internet connection, even though there clearly is. Never mind they probably won't answer a peon like me, but when in doubt, ask the source.

Season 4 of "Project Runway" started off with a bang on Wednesday night. Alas we appear to have lost Tim Gunn's famous podcasts this year in favor of Nina's blog. Ugh. Sorry I don't tune in to hear her pithy comments on fashion designs. Tim always had the most patient or exasperated explanations for the episodes.

A couple of links:
[livejournal.com profile] meiran has started recaps/critiques of the runway designs with opening episode. She's done them for previous seasons. I blame them squarely for getting me curious in the show at all.

Katherine Gerdes, a former contestant, has a blog with recaps and commentary. She's also done some nifty "how to" posts on fashion design itself: How to draw croquis figures and further on drawing clothes. For someone who can't draw worth anything, I found them quite informative.

I'm sure there's beaucoup de PR blogs and recaps out there.

One other random note - I know from my con experiences that I hate having the full purse to tote around. My mother sent me a P.U.P aka a personal utility pouch, featured on the shopping channels. Newco is a Florida company. Anyway, I used mine today for my DC adventures and carried money, cell phone, mp3 player, camera and small notepad without any difficulty. One roomy center pocket and lots of exterior pockets. Just something for the would-be Media West/World Con/hardy tourist types.

Awhile back, I had mentioned I had seen a particular evening dress that seemed perfect for a scene in one of my books. Although I could find lots of pictures of Sue Wong's designs, I couldn't seem to find the exact dress. Still haven't, but at least I've found something useful. It's one of her other dresses from the same(?) collection. It's the right style. Anyway, I'm not a costumer or even particularly a fashionista, even if I did cringe listening to certain models trip over designers' names in a sequence in "America's Next Top Model". (How many ways can you screw up Hermes or Christian Lacroix? Apparently as many as my own name.)

So if any of you can look at the picture and tell how to describe her neckline? Beaded dangly neckpiece? Is there a more technical term?

Cut for size )

Yes, I'm awake. Blame the heat and humidity. It's going to be a lonnnng week I fear.

I spent the day at Pentagon City using the Borders gift certificate my uncle gave me, among other things. I bumped into [livejournal.com profile] boffo9 on the Metro and we chatted about the state of my affairs, mostly related to going back to school. I was also able to go back to see the dress at Macys. I mentioned this at CVS meeting where I was inspired for a scene in "Where or When" by a dress I saw for sale before Christmas. It was an designer evening dress, probably intended as a New Year's gown. Flapper styles are apparently back in style usually with lots of beads and lace. Since that book may end with a New Year's Eve party at a New Orleans jazz club, it gave me all kinds of images. I was amused because I remembered the designer correctly as Sue Wong from her Nocturne collection. I cannot for the life of me find a picture of it online though, which is frustrating. I scribbled down some notes, but I'm sometimes terrible at describing bits and bobs on dresses.

On the other hand, I was not terribly impressed by Lane Bryant. There are some people who just shouldn't be trusted with a meauring tape, especially where bras are concerned. Now granted, I was doing things in reverse, but when you have one person showing two other associates how to measure properly, you might have an issue, especially when you have a large bra selection.

When the alert went to Code Orange, security started checking ids and badges outside. I don't actually have an official id, just show my picture id to the interior security. So the outside security has to radio in my name inside all the time to verify I'm on the list. Occasionally I'll get someone who knows me, but very rarely. This process is mostly an added nuisance and a necessary evil. I'm used to cringing when people mess up my last name. But I'm not used to being called by my *middle* name. That's right. Apparently when looking at a standard state id, they call me by my middle and last name. Even when I say my full name, they mess it up.

Washington Post ran a startling article today saying we haven't had a clear sunny day the whole month since April 28th. Ick. The rain has had the added misery of the higher humidity which my apartment *loves*. Can we say fill up the dehumidifier to the top? Yes we can! *sigh*

Techie note to self: Fascinating article in 5/30 issue of Chronicle of Higher Education called "Haute Cyber" on a collaborative fashion show/ storyline between Fashion Institute of Technology and Simon Fraser. Check library for copy?
